Relaxing in the Sun

For some or other reason we have chose to believe the lie that being busy means we are successful.  If our schedules are fully booked we feel as if we have accomplished something. It is no surprise then that we have equated losing weight with getting busy as well. But, in fact the contrary could be true in your case.

Taking time to relax could actually be the switch that may flip weight loss.

The role of cortisol

When you relax you will not release excess cortisol (stress hormone). Persistent and continuous stress elevates the amount of cortisol and you may gain weight as a result. Why? Cortisol triggers a craving for quick energy foods such as fries, crisps, lollies and pastries. This extra energy is then stored as fat, mainly tummy fat. Adding insult to injury, cortisol contributes to you being hungry more often. But wait, there’s more! Cortisol can also cause decreased muscle mass because it lowers testosterone levels.  The less muscle you have, the less fat you will burn.

The science of relaxation

The good things in life do not ‘just happen.’ You have to be intentional about it.  The same goes for relaxing. Plan for it. Harvard researchers have learned that deep relaxation could result in changes all the way down to our genetic level. It activates disease fighting genes.1
These switched on genes contributed to protection from high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, pain and even infertility.

The good news is that it is never too late to start relaxing. Participants in the above mentioned Harvard study started applying the prescribed relaxation methods and it only took two months for their bodies to begin changing.  Genes that fight inflammation and help prevent cancer began turning on! And the more they practiced relaxation, the more improved were the benefits.
