Stop Making These 6 Training Mistakes

I know what it’s like to spend several hours in the gym each week, for years on end, and get nowhere. Been there, done that. Got the T-shirt. I empathise with you.

Over the past 25 years I have made enough of the mistakes to help you not make them, and I have had enough successes to equip you for your successful journey ahead.

Here are 6 BIG reasons you’re not getting the results you’re after:

Reason #1: You’re not training with enough intensity or you may be training too heavy

Give your body reason to change. Performing 3 ‘easy’ sets on any given exercise will fail to produce the results you require.

Yes, you want to get strong, but constantly going heavy isn’t the best way to reach that goal. All that does is beat you up, fry your Central Nervous System and decrease your athletic ability.

Reason #2: You’re using poor technique

To get the most out of every rep you need to know the proper mechanics and correct anatomical positions of each exercise. Few people do and I know it is sometimes something as little as the angle of your wrist that makes a huge difference. A trainer with experience will be able to pick it up and help you get it right.

Reason #3: You’re using exercises that make you worse

In other words, can actually be detrimental to your fitness. At Thrive Fitness we use very few of the classical powerlifting and Olympic lifting exercises.
Those movements can be too brutal on your body if you are not ready for them. As a consequence, they can decrease your mobility, flexibility and athleticism. There are far safer, more effective alternatives that HAVE to be staples in your program.

Reason #4: You’re not using enough variety

Two of the most common overuse injuries are tennis and golfers elbow. They both come as a result of repeating the same movement with an object weighing less than a kilogram. Imagine what happens when you do the same movement over and over with implements weighing 20, 40 or even 100 kilos?

Variety is not only the spice of life but it’s also what keeps you healthy and in the gym training and making gains.

Reason #5: You’re only focused on strengthening your muscles; not your tendons and ligaments

Most programs build stronger muscles but ignore the tendons and ligaments. When this is the case, the tendons and ligaments can’t keep up with the force the muscles are capable of producing. That’s what leads to injury.

Reason #6: You’re killing your natural testosterone production

Guys – Your testosterone levels peak at around age 27. After that you have to do all you can to stay on top of your game, naturally. Keep your workouts short, avoid adrenal overload, reduce stress levels and fuel your body properly.

Ignore any of these critical factors and it will be much harder to lose bodyfat and tone muscle.
