Forget Being Perfect, Here’s Why

I was training a client on Christmas Eve and I congratulated her on “being so dedicated” when she so easily could have skipped this session.

Her answer was – “I want to be perfect and feel good about myself when I hit the beach tomorrow”

It got me thinking….. and I asked her permission to write this message.

Why do we ‘hunt’ for PERFECTION?

Yes, it can be achieved, but sacrifices HAVE to be made.

I recall back in the ’80s when I first started training. Perfection was the goal. I was training 6 days per week. Yes, I eventually achieved a decent physique, but I had ZERO SOCIAL LIFE. I’ve learned from my mistakes, and one of the most crucial saying that always pops into my head is….. Everything in Moderation (especially when you go 40+).

Here are 2 concepts I’d like to share with you:

1. Trainers don’t all have six-packs.

Yes, we also enjoy an extra piece of pie and skip workouts.

Being fit is important, but it isn’t all we think about.

Fitness for life isn’t a 30-day challenge.

We’re training to enjoy life, not look good for a photoshoot.

2. Technique over ego.

Lighter weights lifted well get better results than heavy weights lifted poorly.

‘Light’ doesn’t mean easy though.

Intensity is important. 2-3 tough sets drive more progress than 4-5 easy sets.

Coupled with Consistency, you’re onto a winner.

And most of all……. Enjoy your training. If you don’t, find something else to do.
