How to Get Fit and Stay in Shape

I do not gain weight easily. I am naturally slim and really have to work at bulking up. Until recently that is. (I know that many of you will be thinking, “Give me a break! You complain about that!” Whether you struggle to lose weight or gain weight, the struggle is real.)

I suspect the main culprit was my mother-in-law who came for a three month visit from the UK, and she treated us to good old home cooking while she was here. (No hard feelings at all, Lorraine.)

Shortly after her departure I noticed a change in my physique. Then one morning I looked in the mirror and my six-pack was gone! Holy crap! How did that happen? I actually had about half an inch of fat that appeared out of no-where. Let’s blame it on me arriving at 52 recently! But actually, I knew that I had been slacking off quite a bit.

I knew it was time to go back and do what I knew had to be done. No, I do not have any secret recipe to staying in the shape, and neither is it a finely honed science. It is common knowledge, and once you start to apply the principles you will see the rewards in all areas of your life, whether it is relationships, mind-set, nutrition, self-motivation or your business.

Want to know what that something is?

It’s a combination of 4 simple principles to get and stay in shape

1. Accountability

Make yourself accountable by letting family and friends know ‘that you are on a mission.’ Whatever the goal is, tell them what it is, and when you’ll achieve it by. You will be amazed how much more focused you’ll be!

2. Clean eating

Keep it simple. Plan your day. Consume fruits or vegetables with EVERY meal. Low carb, high protein and high fat diets work best. Drink at least 2 litres of water. The 80/20 rule: For longevity and consistency, remain strict with your nutrition Monday to Friday. Then ‘relax’ a little at the weekend.

3. An intense 40-minute workout

People ask me ‘What’s the best exercise to burn fat’? ‘What’s the best exercise to get rid of my dinner lady arms?’ (sorry if you are a dinner lady). I always give the same answer: “The best exercise to burn fat ect, bar non, is the one you’ll do…. The one you enjoy the most.

It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as it taxes your breathing and you feel your muscles working.

Ideally, perform a variety of exercise routines 4 times per week – each for a duration of 40 minutes.

4. Consistency

Simple but not easy. Simply find out what works for you! Then (the not so easy part) be consistent in your actions. Give it your all for 3 to 4 weeks and I guarantee you will start to look and feel better and this will give you the momentum to continue your good work.
