Flupped Up

You may recall from my first message to you 4 months ago, that I would be revealing my competition journey…. “Wharts and all.”

Well. I’ve STUFFED – UP BIG TIME……… Resulting in a ‘lay-off.’

It’s been nearly 2 weeks since I’ve lifted any weights. At this stage, I don’t know when I’ll be returning…. fingers crossed, another week…. Two at tops

Here’s what happened:

Was training legs. Whilst on the plate-loaded leg press I did something that I always tell my clients NOT TO DO (especially the guys) DON’T’ BE LEAD BY YOUR EGO!

Set 1: 15 reps – all went well
Set 2: 10 reps – Bit of a ‘tester’ but felt the burn
Set 3: 6 reps – Got through it and felt proud of myself
Set 4: 3 reps – J-u-s-t managed to squeeze them out (with the help of the biggest bloke in the gym standing by, just in case)

Now here we go – the final set…… it’s all about the final set. Looked around for the big bloke again but couldn’t see him.

“I’ll be ok” (I said to myself)

BIG MISTAKE!

Set 5: 8 reps – Got to rep # 7 and felt there was enough petrol in the engine to easily squeeze out 8. But I got cocky…. I held rep #7 for a split second longer at the most challenging part of the movement to create additional intensity.

And this was my undoing!

Went to push the weight back up to the safety point…… there was an initial movement. But then I experience something I’ve never had in my 35 years of training…..

My vision started to close….. pushing like crazy, I couldn’t get it high enough to return it to the safety handle. 420 kilos compressed through my quads. Which compressed me into a small space and into my ribs. I passed out for a split second and then managed to manhandle myself out.

Relieved – I felt a crack in the ribs but otherwise un-scathed

No such luck. The pain came later as I cooled down and the adrenalin subsided

X-ray results revealed no fractured ribs. But I’ve ruptured intercostal muscles between the ribs.

LESSON LEARNT – Don’t be led by your ego and always ask for help if you know you are potentially putting yourself into a compromising position.

The Bodybuilding Competition???? Well, I’m still aiming to compete.

There are 14 weeks to go
Thought about contacting the comp organisers and requesting a special category just for me…….

Men over 60 who are under 3ft 6………. Well, you gotta laugh.

Keep pumpin
